I *love* the dramatic lights/shadows in this, as well as the cool/warm contrast between the subject and background. Plenty to mull over here for my next paint sketch. As always, thanks for posting!
I really love how your watercolor paintings look so rich. I always seem to have problems with this medium looking thin and watery (which is one of the reasons I avoid it and prefer gouache or Stabilo tones). Perhaps I need to spend a month or two playing with it more.
Thanks Kathy, I'm still getting used to pencil and watercolor, something I pretty much stopped doing in the 1990s. I find pencil looks weak and am playing with ways to get my eye around that. But it's always fun to sketch dogs.
Thanks Sparrow Girl, I really wanted to get back to watercolor this April and I'm still playing with now into May. It was difficult in April to not just pick up the gouache! (But I do on the last day!)
Have you used glazing with your watercolors? If things dry lighter than you had hoped or planned you could put another layer on. I find that's helpful.
Mostly I just don't put a lot of water in my washes to begin with.
I'm definitely going to be fiddling with watercolor way into May because I've got a whole lot of boards!
Try it again for a week or two and see what you think.
